Academic Interviewing

In this session, we will discuss the purpose, format, and basics of the academic job interview. We will work on tips for handling the different components of the interview process from the screening phone interview through to the job talk(s). This hands-on class will cover the basics of launching a WordPress site. The WordPress Dashboard will be introduced as well as using themes, plug-ins and widgets.

Communication Process: Developing Written and Oral Projects

Whether beginning an article for publication or preparing for a conference presentation, both activities share a common rhetorical process. This workshop provides a framework to guide you through the process of writing and speaking in an academic context. Communication Process: Developing Written and Oral Projects

In this workshop, you will learn the basic elements that go into a communication project: planning and conducting research, note-taking, brainstorming, outlining, drafting, creating graphics, conversing with sources, revising, and presenting. You will learn the benefits of developing a preliminary research question and statement of purpose before writing. Your facilitator will offer examples of effective and ineffective questions and statements; share creative techniques for exploring and developing your research question; demonstrate good practices in organizing your research and writing; and suggest key resources for support during your composition process. As a result of this workshop, you will be able to begin your written or oral project with the confidence that you are making the most of your time. Copyright and Open Access in Scholarly Communication

This class will go over the basics of what happens when you publish a journal article. Learn about copyright transfer agreements, and understand what it means when you sign your copyright over to a journal publisher. You will also learn about Open Access options for publishing your research.

Crafting a Research Statement

Job postings in higher education, industry, government, and other institutions often require a research statement as part of the application process. This workshop will focus on common elements shared among diverse research statements and how to craft your own research statement specifically for the type of institution to which you are applying. Participants are encouraged to bring their research statements to the workshop for peer review. If you would like your materials critiqued using the projection system during the workshop, please send copies at least one week prior to the event to David Lawrence at CETL. Crafting a Teaching Philosophy Statement

Faculty job postings in higher education typically require applicants to submit a statement of teaching philosophy. For many graduate students, this is a puzzling request. Do they want to know what I will teach? How I will teach? Why I will teach? This workshop offers strategies and tips for writing effective teaching statements. Particular attention will be placed on crafting a document that is specifically addressed to the institution you are applying. Participants are encouraged to bring their teaching statements to the workshop for peer review. Crafting Your Online Professional Presence

When discussing the World Wide Web, one of the fundamental questions asked by communication specialists is: How do we design messages within this medium of communication that appeal to audiences in particular contexts? This workshop is designed to address this question and provide knowledge and an overview of the skills necessary for creating a professional online presence using effective communication strategies and new web publishing technologies. The workshop will draw heavily from websites created by Georgia Tech graduate students from various academic disciplines. From a communication perspective, a CV and cover letter are two of the most strategic documents you will craft as a graduate student. Indeed, both documents share a common purpose, namely, to acquire an interview. This workshop offers rhetorical strategies for moving beyond “template thinking” to personal marketing and customization based on the type of institution to which you are applying. Participants are encouraged to bring their own CV and cover letter to the workshop for peer review. Developing an online presence with Wordpress

Wordpress is open source software used for website creation, blogging etc. Are you looking to create a quick online presence for a research project or promote the department you work in? In this 90 minute session we will introduce you to the basics of working with Wordpress including themes, plugins and manipulating graphics for the web.

EndNote

EndNote is a powerful bibliographic management tool that will help with your research process. EndNote software is available to the Georgia Tech community, as part of your GT Technology Fee. This course is a hands-on session on using EndNote X9 for Windows. At the end of this session you will be able to add references to EndNote from databases and online sources, manage references and PDFs in EndNote, and use Cite While You Write to add citations from EndNote to MS Word documents.

Global Communication Issues

In this workshop, you will learn how to take into account not only the content and structure of your communication but also the ways in which context plays an important role in communication. We will discuss the conventions for professional communication in different cultures, particularly cultures where you are likely to present your work, and how awareness of these conventions is essential to make you an effective global communicator, particularly in professional settings. LaTeX : Technical and Scientific Documentation (INTRO)

Have you ever asked, “Why won’t Word format my paper the way I need it to? Is there a better way?” Then this class is for you! LaTeX is a high-quality typesetting system, with features designed for the production of technical and scientific documentation. The Introduction to LaTeX sessions are hands-on classes on the basics of using LaTeX, including the use of graphics and creating bibliographies. LaTeX Classes are sponsored by the Georgia Tech Library & Information Center and Graduate Student Government.

Making custom Infographics with Adobe Illustrator

Adobe Illustrator is a vector graphics editing tool, commonly used by graphic designers. In this beginning 90 min workshop we will familiarize you with the interface and introduce you to handy features/tools within the package, as we create a basic shapes, graphics and text effect that can be used when designing an infographic or chart.
Exercises may include things like: typing on a path, extrude and bevel, working with text, blending, scaling, adjusting gradients, live trace and experimenting with the shape builder tool. Illustrator is a must have in your arsenal of software for professional looking results

Media Management and Promotion

Learn the art of promoting your research or event through tips on media training, social media and internal promotions. This hour and a half class will take you through the basics of media training, social media awareness and provide information on internal vehicles and resources that can help you meet your goals. In this workshop, we will discuss the importance of being able to communicate your research to those outside of your field. Included in this workshop, you will learn how to develop an elevator pitch about your research, emphasizing how to clearly and briefly explain your research (and why it matters) to non-specialists. Public Speaking

In  this workshop, you will learn the fundamentals of public speaking including how to capture and maintain audience attention and deliver speeches that create a positive and lasting impression. Your facilitator will focus on content and delivery strategies that are specific to the oral portion of any presentation situation, and will also discuss techniques like projection, inflection, vocal emphasis, and non-verbal signals. There will be a question and answer segment following the presentation. In this essentials workshop we will familiarize you with the interface while going over some of the basic tools necessary to create a poster or brochure. Topics may include working with text, text wrap on images, document setup, alignment, and importing images and text . Visual Rhetoric

In  this workshop, we will examine the rhetorical uses of images, focusing on the process of interpreting images, the social connotations of images, the incorporation of images into design, and the balance between images and text in visual-based projects. There will be a question and answer segment following the presentation.
